Wednesday 20th May

Owls have very good eyesight, so they can see far away. Go outside into your garden or stand inside your house looking out of your window. Write a list or draw some of the things that you can see.

Play an owl game – Owls are birds of prey which means that they hunt for their food. They move almost silently because of their soft feathers in their wings. Play this game with a family member, where one person closes their eyes and the other person has to move across the room as silently as they can. If the person listening hears the ‘owl’ they point to where they think it is. If they are correct, swap over, if not, try again!

Tuesday 19th May

You home learning challenge today is to see if you can an Owl Babies themed snack. Below are some examples. I look forward to seeing what you make.

Meet Giggles the Kitten

Friday 1st May: Story Telling Challenge

Learning outcome: to use vocabulary that is influenced by familiar stories.

On Thursday the Zookeeper sent me a new pet. Giggles the kitten. I have attached the letter they sent for you to read.

Giggles loves to play with my cat Mildred. She has been exploring the house and has found lots of places to sleep, including on the bed! She is the perfect pet for me.

I have written a new story about my week using phrases from the Dear Zoo book. I have made my story into a PowerPoint for you to read.

Your challenge today is to create your own story. You could tell your story in whatever way you want. You could

  • Use your own toys, pictures or the photo’s I have sent this week to make your own story.
  • You could make a photo story, draw your story, write a story, make a PowerPoint like mine, or you could video yourself telling your story using your toys.

I have attached a few template for writing your own story books if you want to use them.

Don’t forget you can also use the phonics games and web links I sent for you to practice your letters and sounds.

Thursday 30th April: Number Challenge 1 less

Learning outcome: to say the number that is one less

Silky has been eating lots of fish. Each time she eats a fish the number of fish left gets smaller. We can work this out by finding one less than the starting number. We can count the objects, use our fingers or count backwords to find out what 1 less than a number is.

I have sent you some pictures on a PowerPoint of Silky and her food see if you can help me work out 1 less.
There is a lesson on 1 less on the Oak Academy website:
https://www.thenational.academy/reception/maths/finding-one-less-than-a-given-number-reception-wk1-4
There is also a number blocks episode about counting back from 10
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXtkeDeDUNU

Your challenge today is to find 1 less. Count your objects then see how many are left if you take one away. You could use your toys, sweets, buttons, coins, pasta shapes or anything which can use to count. I have added some 1 less activity resources here and on the website. I look forward to seeing what you have done.
Don’t forget to look at the phonics websites I sent earlier in the week. Have a fun day learning.

Unfortunately my bath is a bit too small for Silky and she does make the house very smelly. I have had to send her back to the zookeeper. I wonder what they will send me next?

One less than Powerpoint

Meet Silky the Seal

Wednesday 29th  April: Number Challenge 1 more

Meet Levi the lizard

W/C 27/4/2020: Dear Zoo wk 2.

A quick note about this weeks learning. This week I am going to be sending pictures of the different animals the zookeeper sends me. The learning each day will be linked to the animals I receive.

Maybe you can get some of your toy animals to act out your version of the story over the week. Take lots of photos because at the end of this week we are going to write or make our own story books using pictures and photos of the animals the zookeeper sends.

Tuesday 28Th  April: Design Challenge

Learning outcome: to talk about how things work. To join construction pieces together to build a model

I really need your help today. Levi is really sneaky and has escaped again. This time I can’t find him! I don’t think he is a very good pet for me. I think I will have to send him back to the zoo when I find him. I will need a new carrier for him which he can’t get out of.

Your challenge today is to design or make an animal carrier or home for an animal. You can draw your design, or make it using boxes, lego, bricks, card or whatever you find around the house. You can choose which animal and  decide what type of carrier or home they would like.

When you have finished see if you can tell someone else about it and how it works. I have sent you some pictures to help you get some ideas for this challenge. I can wait to see what you come up with.

I have attached some information about lizards and a labelling sheet if you would like to know more about this animal. I ahve also attached a hidden animal game which I think Levi would like!

Don’t forget you can also use the phonics games and web links I have sent  to practice your letters and sounds. This is another website with some great games https://www.phonicsbloom.com/  for you to try.

Monday 27th April: Hide and seek challenge

Learning outcome: to use every day language to describe position and give directions

On Saturday the Zookeeper sent me a new pet. Levi the Lizard. I have attached the letter they sent for you to read.

Levi likes to hide and keeps escaping. I have sent you some pictures and a lesson for you to follow on the PowerPoint below. The pictures show some of the hiding places levi has found in my house. I have put some words on there to help describe where they are. Can you describe some of the places he has been hiding? You will need to use words like on, under, next to, in front of.

Your challenge today is to use lots of these words to describe where things are. You could play your own hiding game why not hide one of your toy animal and give your family clues using these kinds of words. You could play a game of I spy - for example I spy with my little eyes something hiding in the trees. You have a treasure hunt with clues, you could try one of the activities on the resources I have sent or come up with your own ideas. Levi and I would love to see what you have done.

Don’t forget you can also use the phonics games and web links I sent last week to practice your letters and sounds. This is another website with some great games https://www.phonicsbloom.com/  for you to try.

There is also a new resource for reception children available from today. The web link is   https://bit.ly/34Q64SQ.

Friday 24Th  April: Investigating length

Reread the story using the book, one of the links or the powerpoint I have attached and talk about the different animals in the story. Encourage the children to join in with the repeated phrases to retell the story – ask them if they can make some animals sounds or actions as you tell the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudDGRQ9QGA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UywEnHKTMXk

There are lots of different sized animals in the story. Today your challenge investiage size by sorting different lengths. You could make some different length snakes using lots of things you can find around the house such as: playdogh, paperchains, tiolet rolls, buttons, beads, paper plates, pasta or come up with your own way.  I have attached some pictures to give you some ideas or you can try your own.

See if you can make some longer and some shorter.  You could try using some objects to measure your snakes - is it shorter than a shoe? The same size as a piece of spagetti? How many bricks of lego long is your snake? Maybe you could look at other ways we measure size too. I have also put some printable resources if you want to use them to inestigate sizes. These are avialable on dojo and the the website.

Thursday 23rd April:

to form simple sentences orally and then in writing.

Revisit the story dear zoo – these are musical versions of the story for a bit of a change.

Nursery Children might pefer to watch this short counting video found on bbciplayer

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08cr24d/numberblocks-series-1-how-to-count

Today your challenge is to do some counting. Here are some ideas for you to try:

  • Sing some counting songs like 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed and count on your fingers
  • Play a game of feed the animal- count and record how many objects you can get into the animals mouth. Maddy and I made a feed the lion game using the template in resources to give you some ideas (see pictures and resources for this amd more ideas)
  • Go an animal hunt around the house, garden or maybe your daily walk -count how many real (or toy) animals you can spot.  Take photos of your hunt and post them on dojo.
  • Count out your toy animals and show me the number on your fingers, use pictures, lines or spots to match the number of objects or try writing the numeral
  • Make your own number game using your toy animals or whatever you have available
  • Match the number of objects to a numeral
  • Use the counting activities or resource sheets in the resources section below.

Feed the animal games

Tuesday 21st April: Move Like an Animal

Learning outcome children will join in with stories, actions, songs and rhymes

Revisit the story dear zoo using the book, power point of the story or online story using these links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudDGRQ9QGA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UywEnHKTMXk

Encourage children to join in with the story as it is read using the patterned language (I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet they sent me a…..  Pause so children can say which animal is found).

Today your challenge is to get active.  Have a go at moving like zoo animals– stomp like an elephant, slither like a snake or hop like a frog. You could create an animal dance, make and play the animal movement game attached or make up your own game. There are some good songs with actions you could use to help you.

Monday 20th April:

Learning outcome: children will make predictions and answer questions about the story

This week our learning will be based on the book Dear zoo.  You may already have this book but if not I have attached a power point of the story and you can also find the story being read online using these links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudDGRQ9QGA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UywEnHKTMXk

To introduce the story talk to children about the different animals you might find at the zoo- would these be good pets? You could use some soft toys or play animals to talk about where each type of animal lives and which are sometimes kept as pets.  As you read the story see if the children can guess which animal is hiding behind the flap.

Your challenge today is to create one (or more) of the animals from the story using whatever you have available. You could create a picture, model, face mask, sock puppet, toy or even an edible zoo animal! You could use them to retell the story yourself. I have put some pictures on the site to start you off- I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

You can also find lots of resources including colouring sheets and games linked to this book on the following website:

Thursday 2nd April

Good morning. Thank you to everyone that has been sending in pictures of their challenges from home, it’s been really great to see the things that you have been doing.

Today your learning challenge is to make a card for Superworm to send to his friends to say thank you.

I look forward to seeing your cards.

Wednesday 1st April

Good morning. Today’s learning challenge is to make some Superworm repeated patterns. You may want to make a worm template, then either by using wool or cotton, wrap it around the worm using different colours to make a repeated pattern.

If you do not have any wool, you may choose to draw a picture of a worm and paint or colour the worm using different colours to make a repeated pattern. How many repeated patterns can you make? Below is an example of what you could do.

Tuesday 31st March

Good morning. It has been great to hear that lots of you are enjoying our story this week. Today your daily challenge is to re read the story of Superworm. Discuss the main characters in the story. Are they heroes or villains? Why? Discuss what happens to the characters in the story. The online link to the book is below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0keNDquvZEE

Your learning challenge today is to see if you can design a superhero costume for Superworm to wear. You might want to do a picture, make a collage or make something. I have attached a superhero mask template that you may want to use to help.

I look forward to seeing what you make.

Monday 30th March

Good morning, hope you are well. This week our learning will focus around the story Superworm by Julia Donaldson.

Here is a link of a reading of the story for you to watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0keNDquvZEE

Your learning challenge for today is to make a list of words and phrases that could be used to describe Superworm. You might want to describe the way that he looks or his personality and what kind of character he is. Challenge - Can you compare these to other descriptions of superhero characters that you may know?

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Below is a range of printable resources you may want to use.

Friday 27th March: British Values Day

Today your challenge is to investigate British Values: here are some ideas

  • Democracy: you could hold a family vote (about what to eat, what to watch on TV, what book to read etc)
  • Rule of Law: you could make a new game with your own rules to follow or follow someone else’s rule to play a game.
  • Individual Liberty: making choices for yourself and being independent. Why not make your own lunch today?
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance: share your toys or treats with someone else today.

To link to our story about Nell you could also investigate police dogs using the ideas below.

  • Find out about how dogs help the police.
  • Think of some questions to ask a police dog handler?
  • Use your own toy dogs to make a story about a police dog.
  • Design or make something which might help a police dog - maybe something they could carry or wear

Esspresso and Cbeebies have some resource’s including videos about police dogs which you could look at. Here are some examples:

Thursday 26th March: Shape Detective

Reread the story with the children. Using pictures from the book as a prompt talk about some of the problems Nell has solved.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ45DlB7tEs

Nell would like some help, someone has been stealing shapes with only straight sides.  Can you help her to find some things which would be these shapes?

You could make a shape collage, draw some shapes with straight sides, collect toys or objects with straight sides, go on a shape walk around your garden and take photos of things with straight sides. Or find another way to investigate shapes with straight sides.

Here are some websites with games and resources to support learning about shape.

I have added some printable resources for you to choose from if you wish.

Espresso also have resources to support this learning: please see the list of websites for details of address and login

Take this learning further:

  • Use masking tape, lollipops, matchsticks or straws to make some shapes with straight sides.
  • Make some shape pictures or do some shape printing

Wednesday 35Th March: Sniff, Sniff, Sniff ! Smell Detective

Reread the story with the children talking about events, characters and setting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ45DlB7tEs

Nell has a very sensitive nose and can identify everything. Your challenge today is to investigate some different smells. See if you can match different smells to pictures or food packets. You could make some smelly playdough, find some different smelling plants, make some smelly potions, create smelly paints or find some other ways to test your sense of smell!

Take this learning further:

  • Learn more about the nose and how we smell. What other senses do we have?
  • There are some great websites with ideas about senses, here are a few examples.

Tuesday 24th March: Character Detective

Your challenge today is to tell us all about the character of Nell. Reread the story with the children. Using pictures from the book as a prompt, talk about some of the things we know about Nell. The online link for the book is below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ45DlB7tEs

Think about what she looks like and what characteristics she has (e.g good sense of smell, likes to read stories, friendly, solves problems). Talk about the adventures she has.

Possible questions to ask: What kind of a character is Nell – good or bad? Hero or villain? What adventures does she have? How do we know this? What does she do to solve the problems? What does she do that makes her special? What is she good at?

To take this learning further you could:
• Draw/ paint or make collage pictures or model of Nell
• Create a wanted poster and then use full sentences to describe Nell and what she is like.
• Make a video for a news report about Nell and her amazing sense of smell.
• Make crime scene for Nell to investigate (who has stolen all the crisps/ biscuits etc)
• Become a detective and solve your own mystery!

Or you could come up with your own ideas!
I have added a PDF with some ideas for this book in the resources section below  if you want to look for more activities to try.   Remember to let us know what you get upto

 Billy Goats Gruff Challenge

Over the last 2 weeks we have been reading the 3 Billy Goats Gruff.  Your challenge this week is to design something which will help them cross the river. You could choose to make or draw your design.  You might choose a boat, raft, bridge or some kind of flying machine to get across the river!  You might find a way to capture the Troll or Trick him! Maybe you can think of a different way?  Please send us pictures of your creations on Do-Jo.
