This half term we begin our learning with a visit to Sheffield Manor Lodge where Mary queen of Scots was held captive. We will meet some characters from Tudor times, dress up, investigate the herb gardens and make a herb bag. Our work will focus on stories about Knights, Princesses, Princess and Dragons. We have also booked a story teller to visit, who will bring some puppets and artefacts for the children to investigate.
Communication, Language and Literacy: We will be learning to listen to fairy tales and using these as a starting point for role play,singing and rhymes. Our learning will be drawn from first hand experiences including the 'Castle' role play area. We will also be cooking, designing and exploring the environment. This term we will be applying phonics learning segmenting and blending sounds within words to read and write. We will also investigate some nonfiction texts using information from books, posters, leaflets and the internet. We will be learning to follow instructions, read and write labels and will be creating captions to match pictures.
Reading: children will read with an adult each week and will bring reading books home to share with you. Please check reading journals for details. We will also share stories as a class.

Writing: Children will practice recognising and writing their names using a name card to help them. There will be lots of opportunities for children to explore mark making in different areas of the classroom.
Phonics: Phase 1, phase 2 and phase 3 phonics will be taught daily
Creative learning will draw on first hand experiences, with opportunities to create pictures, investigate colours, textures and smells and to make models linked to our learning inspired by the traditional stories we will be reading. We will be learning songs and acting out stories in role.
Mathematical Development: we will be focusing on recognising, sequencing and using numbers to 20 in our calculations. This will include some problem solving activities linked to our topic. Children will also investigated shapes, space and measure within the topic including making models, taking measurements in the role play area and using directions to find clues.
RE: In RE learning we will be learning about Baptism and Looking at the festival of Easter using the Understanding Christianity resources.
PSED: This term children will have lots of challenges to develop cooperative learning skills. There will be lots of opportunities for children to build their play alongside and with other children, taking turns, sharing resources and sharing ideas. There will also be opportunities for the children to build their self confidence and adapt their behaviour to different social situations.
Physical development: Children will travel in different ways around the setting using bikes, obstacles, climbing equipment to build their gross motor skills. In addition to this Reception children will take par in 30 minutes of PE each week. This term we are looking at gymnastic skills and we have a session booked with a coach to develop these skills. Fine motor skills will include using small tools, cooking activities, gardening and mark making.
Knowledge and Understanding of the world: Children will be using their senses to explore everyday changes.
Forest Friday will continue with a focus on caring for plants and animals - please continue to send children with warm outdoor clothing, wellies and gloves to enable them to enjoy this time to the full. As part of our learning about traditional stories we will look at growing and changing including planting seeds. We will also be working on practical activities to help the wildlife in school during the winter months. We will continue to monitor the changes we can see week on week as the seasons change as part of our long term study of the environment.
