Spring

Our topic for the first half of the Spring Term is 'Victorian life'. We begin this topic with a day in the life of a Victorian school child. On Tuesday the 4th of January the children will enter a transformed classroom where the teachers will take on the role of a Victorian school teacher and the learning will be based around the 3 R's as it was in a Victorian school.   Through the term we will be learning about Queen Victoria, what life was like in the Victorian era and how it compares to life in modern Britain.  Our literacy will include some Victorian era stories and some information texts about the era.

We will link some geographical fieldwork to this, including walking around the village and identifying human and physical features. We will look at the church, the shops and how houses have changed over time.  We will also create maps of the area.

We will also be learning about animals including humans as part of our science curriculum. This includes identifying different types of animals, what they eat and how they survive.

In RE we will be learning about Judaism including looking at stories about Moses. We will link these to Christianity and notice the similarities. As part of our RE work we will also visit the church and look at why the church in Treeton is important to Christians, our school and the wider community.

The year one children will still have lots of play based learning opportunities this term. This will enable them to use and build on the approaches to learning developed in the EYFS.  A few examples include a Victorian kitchen role play area, a Peter Rabbit  small world with lots of Beatrix Potter stories, animal sorting activities including looking at different species and habitats.
