Intent

At Treeton C of E Primary School, we are committed to delivering an engaging and inspiring English curriculum that fosters a positive attitude towards both reading and writing, promoting literacy as an enjoyable, purposeful and essential part of school life. Our intent is for all children to experience a high-quality English curriculum that develops fluent readers, confident writers and effective communicators who can clearly articulate their ideas, thoughts and emotions in the wider world.

Our English curriculum is rigorous, well-structured and carefully sequenced, providing frequent and purposeful opportunities for reading, writing, speaking and listening. It is fully aligned with the aims of the National Curriculum for English, which are embedded across literacy lessons and reinforced throughout the wider curriculum.

We aim to ensure that all children develop a secure and progressive knowledge base in reading and writing, following a clear pathway of progression as they move through the primary years. High-quality texts are at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to develop fluency, comprehension and a rich vocabulary while also supporting high standards of writing. Through regular assessment and review, we identify next steps and provide targeted support where needed, ensuring that all pupils experience success.

We believe that a strong foundation in reading and writing is essential in equipping our children with the skills, confidence and love of learning they need to participate fully and positively as members of society.

Implementation

Developing a love of reading and writing is at the heart of our English curriculum. Children begin their literacy journey with daily phonics lessons using Read Write Inc., where they develop foundational reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This strong early foundation equips pupils with the confidence to engage with texts and communicate effectively. As they progress, they move seamlessly into Pathways to Read and Pathways to Write, building comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills in a structured and progressive way.

Our classrooms provide engaging and stimulating reading environments, with a wide range of texts and genres, ensuring children are exposed to different styles, structures, and formats. Across school, pupils work on developing key reading skills, including vocabulary, prediction, inference, sequencing, retrieval, summarising, and explaining, with a strong emphasis on understanding and responding to texts.

Pathways to Write underpins our approach to writing, providing a clear sequence of lessons that enable children to plan, draft, revise, and publish high-quality writing. Writing lessons build progressively towards extended pieces of work, with spelling, punctuation and grammar embedded within meaningful contexts. Through this approach, children see the clear link between reading and writing and understand how the two complement each other.

Assessment for learning is embedded throughout the curriculum. Children are encouraged to reflect on their successes and identify areas for development with the support of their teachers. This ensures a continuous, individualised approach to improving reading and writing skills, enabling every pupil to achieve their full potential.

Impact

The impact of our English curriculum is evident in the confidence, skills, and enjoyment of our pupils. Through Read Write Inc., children develop strong phonics, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Progressing to Pathways to Read and Pathways to Write, pupils build strong comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills, enabling them to understand texts and express their ideas clearly.

Pupils read fluently and confidently and write effectively across a range of genres. They use an increasingly rich vocabulary, can explain and justify their ideas, and show genuine enjoyment in reading and writing. They are well prepared to apply these skills across the wider curriculum and in future learning.

Impact is monitored through phonics and reading assessments, formative assessment in lessons, pupil discussions and written work, book scrutiny, pupil voice, and national assessments where appropriate. By the time pupils leave our school, they are confident, capable readers and writers with the knowledge, skills, and love of literacy to succeed in all areas of life.
