Reading Vipers
Children are explicitly taught the skills of reading (outlined in the National Curriculum and the KS1 and KS2 test domains) through the use of VIPERS which were created by Rob Smith (The Literacy Shed).
The Reading Vipers can be used by both KS1 and KS2 with a little adaption. The main difference being in the S.
Sequence - KS1
Summarise - KS2
In KS1, ‘Explain’; is not one of the content domains, rather it asks children why they have come to a certain conclusion, to explain their preferences, thoughts and opinions about a text.
In KS2, the Explain section covers the additional content domains of 2F, 2G and 2H which are not present in KS1.
The files below give more information about how VIPERS is used to teach reading skills.
Reading Spines
Our 'Reading Spines' are one element of the approach we take to foster a love for reading in our children. The spines are a core of books that create a living library inside our children's minds. It is a store of classics and essential high quality reads that help our children engage at a deeper level. We have three core spines for each year group including reception. In each classroom, we have Pie Corbett’s Reading, Poetry and Rich and Diverse spines.

Reading Newsletters
Every term, we produce Treeton's ‘Reading Matters’. This is a space to inform you and highlight all the wonderful ways we promote reading in our school. We hope you enjoy the first edition.
World Book Day
We love to celebrate World Book Day each year. This year on March 5th we:
Asked children to dress as a word. This could be a noun, verb or adjective. Can you guess any words? Some children chose to dress as their favourite book character too. Which is your favourite?
We held a World Book Day competition to write a book. Our School Councillors spent time reading and voting for their favourite books. The books were displayed in the library for all to read. Here are some of our entries:
We celebrated our love of reading by holding a whole school event. Each class spent time learning about a different author and then displayed it in the school hall. Parents were invited to visit and spend time with their child looking at and reading their work. We also held a book fayre which raised over £500 worth of free books for the school. Thank you so much.
