The school day

The school day

Gates open: 8.35am

School day: 8.45am - 3.15pm

Start of the day:

  • Gates (Bradshaw Avenue/allotment gate accessible from Rother Crescent) unlocked at 8.35am
  • School begins at 8.45am. The whistle is blown by a class teacher to signal the start of the day.
  • Gates (Bradshaw Avenue/allotment gate accessible from Rother Crescent) locked at 8.55am.
  • Once inside the gates, children wait in the playground until their teacher collects them at 8.45am. School staff cannot take responsibility for children before 8.45am. Parents/Carers must remain with their children until this time.
  • There will be a staff member on each playground from 8.35am each morning.
  • For Health and Safety reasons, dogs are not permitted on the school grounds.

Late arrivals

If a child is late, after 8.55am, the parent and child must enter through the main entrance on Wood Lane. The child must be signed in by a parent/carer. If a child arrives after 9.30am, the morning’s absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

Lateness will be closely monitored by the school and our DSAT Education Welfare Officer, Alison Hallewell.

Leaving the school grounds at the end of the day:

  • Gates (Bradshaw Avenue/allotment gate accessible from Rother Crescent) unlocked at 3.10pm
  • School finishes at 3:15pm.
  • If another adult is to collect a child either temporarily or permanently, we ask parents to contact the class teacher so they can log this information.
  • If for any reason there is an unavoidable delay, parents are asked to contact the school so a message can be passed onto the class teacher.

  • The school retains the right to seek parental permission before sending home a younger child with someone:

• who is not known to the school

• when the school have not been informed of alternative collection arrangements

• when the school are not certain that the person collecting the child is over 16 years old

• when the school feels that that they are placing the child in an unsafe situation, e.g. if the person collecting appears to be under the influence of a substance (alcohol/drugs). In this incidence, the school retains the right to contact the police or children’s services.

At the end of the school day, a staff member will dismiss as outlined below:

  • Nursery: End of day 11.45am. Nursery will be dismissed at the allotment gate. They will be accompanied by 2 staff members. The staff member present will dismiss one child at a time, keeping the gate closed until a named adult Is present for each child.

  • Reception – Year 4: All classes will be dismissed from their classroom door one child at a time. The children will remain in the classroom seated at their table/carpet area. Please ensure that you are visible to the class teachers by standing in clear view of the classroom door.

  • Year 5 and Year 6: Pupils are dismissed via the UKS2 steps. If a child walks home independently they will be dismissed first from class. All pupils who are being collected will be accompanied by a member of staff down the steps. We request that parents don’t engage the teacher in conversation whilst they are supporting this safety protocol. If a parent would like for their child to walk home alone, we request that it is confirmed in writing (See appendix 1 below).

If parents request any adjustments to the above arrangements, they must be agreed in writing by parents and a Senior Leader.

If a child is collected by an after-school provider, please ensure that you have spoken with them about arrangements for the collection of your child and are clear about their collection protocols.

The safety of the children during this release time is of paramount importance to us and in this respect, we would ask that if you have more than one child to collect, please be patient and allow us the time to do this safely.

After-school Clubs (After 4pm)

If children are attending an after-school club, the children are dismissed through the main school entrance by a staff member. The staff member will dismiss pupils to the named responsible adult as identified by the parent.

Collection from School during School Hours

Parents/carers should ensure that routine appointments, e.g. to see the dentist or doctor, are made during the school holidays or after school wherever possible. If your child needs to attend appointments during the school day, evidence of the appointment/s may be requested by the school office prior to the appointment day. When collecting your child to attend an appointment, parents/carers are requested to do so from the main school entrance where you will be greeted by our office staff. A member of staff will bring your child safely to you in the school foyer. You will need to sign your child out of school.

Meeting with Staff at the beginning of the day

Unfortunately, because of the requirements for staff to be on duty around the premises, not all staff will be available to discuss issues before school begins. Our Head of School will usually be available on the yard, or you are welcome to make an appointment to speak with the class teacher by messaging them on Class Dojo, or phoning the school office if this is an urgent matter.  We will do our utmost to get back to you as soon as possible, however this may be after the end of the school day.
