Early Reading and Phonics

Phonics is taught using 'Bug club phonics' programme from Pearson education. Bug Club Phonics, part of the Bug Club family, features on the Department for Education's validated systematic synthetic programme list and is available for English Hubs funding.

Early reading

Reading is taught through whole class shared reading, small group guided reading and individual reading sessions.

Guided reading:

  • Any children working at Phonics Phase 5 or below will read a Phonetically Decodable guided reading text matched to the sounds they have been learning in phonics that week.
  • Children working above Phase 5 will read a banded book.

More details about the phonic resources, reading schemes and books available can be found in the document below.

Reading Spines

At Treeton we value reading for enjoyment and want our children to develop a lifelong love of reading. Research shows that children's experience of reading has a significant impact on their attainment.  We are using the Pie Corbett Reading Spines through school and have purchased a set of new books to link with these for each year group. These books are  high quality reading books at an age appropriate level, although they may choose from a different year group. These books are available for children to read in class and to borrow as their reading books. We ask that these books are valued and cared for so that others can share once your child has finished reading it. The list of books is a great guide of quality books for reading with your child, but not an exhaustive list.  Information about these books is attached along with some information about reading spines to support you as you read with them.
