Maths

AIMS
Our long-term aim is to produce an ambitious, connected curriculum accessible to all pupils in schools right through from Reception to the end of Year 6. We adopt the White Rose Maths scheme as a planning tool, but we adapt according to the need of our pupils at that time. This adaptation is based upon summative assessment gap information, ongoing formative teaching judgements and pupil feedback. We make the decisions to provide the bespoke learning approach which we prioritise.

When teaching mathematics at Treeton, we intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the needs of all individuals and sets them up with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to become successful in their future adventures. We aim to prepare them for a successful working life. We incorporate sustained levels of challenge through varied and high quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Pupils are required to explore maths in depth, using mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their workings. A wide range of mathematical resources are used and pupils are taught to show their workings in a concrete, pictorial and abstract form wherever suitable. They are taught to explain their choice of methods and develop their mathematical reasoning skills. We encourage resilience, adaptability and acceptance that struggle is often a necessary step in learning. Our curriculum allows children to better make sense of the world around them relating the pattern between mathematics and everyday life

Through our carefully planned curriculum, which is informed by timely and focused assessments, we cover the following subject areas throughout key stages 1 and 2:

- Number & place value

- Addition & subtraction

- Multiplication & division

- Fractions (decimals and percentages)

- Measurement

- Geometry

We want pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to be able to reason and to solve problems. Our curriculum embraces these National Curriculum aims, and provides guidance to help pupils to become:

Visualisers – we use the CPA(Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach to help pupils understand mathematics and to make connections between different representations. This approach is explained further in our Calculations Policy.

Describers – we place great emphasis on mathematical language and questioning so pupils can discuss the mathematics they are doing, and so support them to take ideas further.

Experimenters – as well as being fluent mathematicians, we want pupils to love and learn more about mathematics.

We also use the following supplementary resources support the teaching and learning of Maths:
